Homeless Polar Bears Appear in DC; Bomb Squad Attacks

by sciencesays

A joint art project by Greenpeace and Mark Jenkins this Tuesday saw a series of “homeless” polar bear mannequins placed around Washington DC in various high-traffic areas.

The bears were dressed and positioned in stereotypically “homeless” configurations, slumped next to a doorway, pushing a shopping cart full of junk, or rummaging through a trash can.

Armed with signs reading “SOS, “Need more ice, not more oil!” and “Oil addiction ruined my life,” bears were placed in a number of high-profile areas, including the Washington mall, in front of the Capitol building, and in front of at least one Metro station.

The bear rummaging through the trash at the Metro station managed to get the most attention - like having the Metro station closed and an extensive investigation by the DC police’s bomb squad!

Even in the midst of the recent financial crisis, this stunt commanded serious time on all the DC nightly newscasts, and briefly became the talk of the town. Awesome.

Do you think this sort of thing is effective for an environmental campaign?
