Score One for Charles Darwin

Big ships turn slowly, but they can turn - the Church of England announced this weekend that they will finally, finally endorse the theory of evolution.

In honor of Darwin’s 200th birthday, and the 150th anniversary of On The Origins of Species in 2009, the Church is putting together a comprehensive program to illustrate the compatibility of evolution with faith, and indeed Darwin’s ability to illustrate “the conclusion that a healthy balance between the mystery of faith and the wonders of scientific discovery is essential.” They crow proudly about the influence of the church in Darwin’s own life, and really push the idea of synergy:

“Theology and science each have much to contribute in the assertion of the Psalmist that we are ‘fearfully and wonderfully made’. I hope that this new section will not only provide a source of information and knowledge about Charles Darwin and his work, but that it will prove to be a resource for growing in wisdom and understanding.”

Regardless of your personal religious beliefs, isn’t a breath of fresh air to see a church that says “Yes - this theory of how intricately things work just proves the genius and beauty of our God” and accepts science as an observational tool, not a threat to their cause?
